Brisbane to Sydney Self Drive For those not wanting to really see anything along the way, this journey can be a comfortable two-day drive or a very long one day drive but, if you want to explore or relax, then we suggest the following 6 day itinerary which will ensure you see the best that the South of Queensland and the North of New South Wales has to offer.
Day 1 Brisbane to Byron Bay (118 miles)
If you are starting your self-drive on arrival the collect your Hertz rental car from the airport; alternatively you can collect your rental car from a downtown location.
Ensure you see Brisbane at its best, by doing a Brisbane Discovery Stay before setting off for Sydney. Depart Brisbane and join the Gold Coast Highway heading south. The Gold Coast stretches for fifty miles to the New South Wales border. Take a slight detour from the highway to see the best that the Gold Coast has to offer, from the rural town of Beenleigh to Yatala, home of Aussie meat pies and the Carlton Brewhouse (Queenslands largest brewery). Pass well known resorts such as Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach. Two nights at the Breakfree Eco Beach at Byron Bay (studio room)
Day 2 At leisure in Byron Bay
With its numerous beaches, unspoilt hinterland, and relaxed lifestyle, Byron Bay is a popular tourist destination. The most easterly point in Australia has average summer temperatures of 21C - 28C, and average winter temperatures of 15C - 21C, both locals and visitors are able to enjoy plenty of outdoor activities including many festivals throughout the year. Either relax on one of Byron Bay's seven beaches, enjoy one of the regions roving markets with new age funky products and home-made produce. With three National Parks and four nature reserves within easy reach, there are plenty of options on spending your day.
Day 3 Byron Bay to Coffs Harbour (149 miles)
Leaving Byron Bay, travel along the coast road through the pretty resort town of Lennox Head, at the southern edge of Seven Mile Beach. At Ballina, home to some of the most beautiful surfing beaches in Australia join the Pacific Highway. Travel via the town of Woodburn to Maclean. Proclaimed as "the Scottish town in Australia" Maclean is home to an annual Highland Gathering every Easter. Take an interesting detour on the coast road to Yamba which may be a good place to stop for lunch. Yamba is a scenic holiday and surfing resort, with stylish village charm, pristine beaches, national parks and award winning restaurants. Continue southwards via South Grafton before arriving in Coffs harbour. Overnight Pelican Beach Australis, Coffs Harbour (resort room)
Day 4 Coffs Harbour to Port Stephens (280 miles)
Depart Coffs Harbour, a coastal resort town famous for its bananas and fishing; south of Coffs Harbour and stretching from the coast to the New England National Park is the Nambucca Valley. With picturesque waterways, rainforest and deserted beaches it is a scenic drive southwards, perhaps enjoy a drink at the "Pub With No Beer" in Taylor's Arm. Continue on via Kempsey, a vast tourist area with many small coastal settlements and in the foothills of some great mountain country, before arriving in Port Stephens the blue water paradise. Day 5 Port Stephens to the Hunter Valley (59 miles)
Only a short drive today; as we leave the coast and head via Kurri Kurri along the Hunter River to New South Wales' premier wine producing area, The Hunter Valley. One of the longest established wine producing areas of Australia, the Hunter Valley has over seventy wineries in the area, so enjoy visiting a few of them today, many wineries have fine restaurants also. Day 6 Hunter Valley to Sydney (105 miles)
Either head straight to Sydney or you can lengthen your day and drive via the beautiful Blue Mountains and the town of Katoomba. The straight drive to Sydney takes you about two to two and a half hours and you could be in Sydney for a lunchtime flight or in plenty of time to check in to your chosen hotel and have a few nights exploring the vibrant, exciting city.
